Being A Kid Again
Letting Yourself Have Fun

As we grow older and embrace the multitude of responsibilities that adulthood brings, we often bury a part of ourselves along the way. During childhood, each new day brought a new adventure in the form of play and learning. The fun you had was spontaneous and chaotic, unplanned and exuberant. While your obligations, successes and failures, anxiety about the future, and lofty goals may make it seem like it’s dangerous to step out of the role and routine of an adult, the child within you still remembers what it was like to be full of mischief and good humor. Having fun for the pure delight of it can feel frivolous, but part of having fun is letting go and acting like a kid again. And a little fun can combat stress and lead to creative inspiration.

It can be difficult to get excited about the changing of the seasons or the coming of a new year when you work year round. But what better reason is there to have fun than the simple joy of long summer days that are great for searching for four-leaf clovers, piles of autumn leaves to jump in, making snow angels in the wintertime, or jumping through puddles in the spring? Kids know that fun doesn’t have to be carefully planned or scheduled. Why not go to the nearest playground and spend some time on the swings? Or shoot crumpled paper basketballs into your wastebasket during a slow afternoon in the office? Fun can come from veering away from your normal routine. Have breakfast for dinner and cake for breakfast once in a while. Do something you haven’t done since childhood, like make freezer pops, ride a bike, build a sandcastle, or paint with your fingers. Finding fun in unexpected places is a kind of joy no one can take away from you. Every day can be your own personal celebration, even when things aren’t necessarily going your way.

A little fun can go a long way toward lifting your spirit, especially when you find yourself doing something a tad wacky, like doing a cannonball off the high dive. There are lessons to be learned in doing so, about staying carefree and doing something that makes you laugh every day. Having fun is great for your healthJJJ!

Listening With Your Heart

Most of us were born and raised in cultures that value the head over the heart and, as a result, we place our own hearts below our heads in a sort of inner hierarchy of which we may not be conscious. What this means is that we tend to listen and respond from the neck up, often leaving the rest of our bodies with little or no say in most matters. This is a physical habit, which sometimes feels as ingrained as the way we breathe or walk. However, with effort and awareness, we can shift the energy into our hearts, listening and responding from this much deeper, more resonant place.

The brain has a masterful way of imposing structure and order on the world, creating divisions and categories, devising plans and strategies. In many ways, we have our brains to thank for our survival on this planet. However, as is so clear at this time, we also need the wisdom of our hearts if we wish to continue surviving in a viable way. When we listen from our heart, the logical grid of the brain tends to soften and melt, which enables us to perceive the interconnectedness beneath the divisions and categories we use to organize the world. We begin to understand that just as the heart underlies the brain, this interconnectedness underlies everything.

Many agree that this is the most important work we can do at this time in history, and there are many practices at our disposal. For a simple start, try sitting with a friend and asking him to tell you about his life at this moment. For 10 minutes or more, try to listen without responding verbally, offering suggestions, or brainstorming solutions. Instead, breathe into your heart and your belly, listening and feeling instead of thinking. When you do this, you may find that it’s much more difficult to offer advice and much easier to identify with the feelings your friend is sharing. You may also find that your friend opens up more, goes deeper, and feels he has really been heard. If you also feel great warmth and compassion, almost as if you are seeing your friend for the first time, then you will know that you have begun to tap the power of listening with your heart.

Treasure Hunting
Discovering the Little Things that Make Us Happy

The Purpose of life is to be happy. Life is full of little wonders that can make us happy. The sound of a baby’s laughter, a good book, your health, the comforting smell of a favorite old sweatshirt, and the warmth from a cup of hot tea are simple pleasures that can easily put smiles on our faces. These “little things” are easily accessible to us and can be sources for finding happiness. A key to doing so is taking the time to put those rose colored glasses from childhood back on so you can easily find the joy in all the “little things” that life has to offer.

Finding a puppy rummaging through the laundry basket, trying on that perfect shade of lipstick, or discovering the extra change you left in your back pocket can turn into moments of delight. Like kids digging in the sandbox for buried trinkets, we may even begin to experience happiness when we engage in the seemingly mundane. Figuring out a software program can feel like deciphering a treasure map, and that first sip of tea in the morning can taste like a forbidden delicacy. Swaying to music playing on the radio can turn into an interpretive jig, riding a bike can seem like flying to the moon, and getting a phone call from that special someone can feel like winning the lottery. A pickup game of basketball becomes an exciting match among champions, and observing an elderly couple walking hand in hand can turn into a meditation on peace and contentment.

When we begin rediscovering that the little things in life can make us happy, we naturally want to share this joy with others. We may gush over a friend when we run into them unexpectedly, praise a street musician for their talents, or blow bubbles for the neighborhood kids to chase. We may even start to think of the little things we can do to make other people happy, which in turn makes us happy all over again. There is an endless supply of little things and little moments that can make us happy. Happiness can be any where at any time all we have to do is look for them, and they’ll magically start to appear. Your natural state is to be healthy & happy!
