Create Time For Self-Compassion
Being Gentle With Ourselves

During those times when our lives are filled with what seems to be constant change and growth, it is important to remember that we need to be gentle with ourselves. Since it can be easy to use our energy to keep up with the momentum of our lives, we may not be aware of the fact that we are much more likely to run ourselves down. When things seem to be moving quickly, it is especially essential that we make a point to slow down and be gentle with ourselves.

It might be difficult to notice what is happening to us for we may be so caught up in the whirlwind of our lives that we lose sight of the direction in which things are heading. Being gentle with ourselves doesn’t mean that we don’t accomplish things. Instead it means that we honor ourselves on an ongoing basis and take care of the needs of our bodies.

This means different things to different people. For instance, it could mean having a session with your chiropractor; taking a remedy, herbs, or vitamins; or getting extra sleep. Putting our energy into ourselves in this way helps create space for a more positive, loving, and accepting view of our lives. By setting the intention to do so, we will be more cognizant of our energy levels on a daily basis and more able to replenish them as needed.

The more we are able to treat our bodies with gentleness, the more tenderness and compassion we will call forth into our lives. Learning to understand and pay attention to what our self needs will in turn allow us to fill our lives with unlimited loving and healing energy and to truly take care of the things that mean the most to us.

The Power Behind Us
People That Support Us

Behind each of us stands at least one supporter. This was once thought to be the spouse who ran the home while leaving the other spouse free to work. While this is still one valid scenario, most of us will find that we have other kinds of supporters in our lives. In some cases, our supporters are the people whose help allows us to do the things we’re best at, see to our obligations, or pursue our dreams. In other cases, our support may come from the people who are there to help us through life’s challenges by offering us their strength and bolstering our spirit. Our support may come from our families and friends or from the people we hire-nannies, assistants, gardeners, healers, therapists, and advisors. Our supporters may be the mentors who help us express ourselves by listening to us as we share our thoughts and feelings. Our supporter can be the person sitting next to us at a networking meeting or the teacher from our childhood whose words still resonate in our minds. We have always had supporters around us whether we noticed them or not. No matter where the support comes from, few of us can make it through life without assistance.

As we take the time to acknowledge everyone that has every supported us, we can’t help but feel grateful. Understanding our place in our human support system helps us see that just as there are people that support us, we are a supporter to many people. By gratefully accepting the expertise and assistance of our supporters, we can consciously and more easily build a life that we love. Thanks to our staff, groups, friends, and loved ones for all their support. We all need each other’s support to thrive this world.

Exercising Flexibility
Mind Stretching

Flexibility is the capacity to bend without breaking, as well as a continual willingness to change or be changed in order to accommodate new circumstances. People with flexible minds are open to shifting their course when necessary or useful; they are not overly attached to things going the way they had planned. This enables them to take advantage of opportunities that a more rigid person would miss out on. It can also make life a lot more fun. When we are flexible, we allow for situations we could not have planned, and so the world continues to surprise and delight us.

Since reality is in a constant state of flux, it doesn’t make sense to be rigid or to cling to any one idea of what is happening or what is going to happen. We are more in tune with reality when we are flexible. Being in tune enables us to adjust to the external environment and other people as they change and grow. When we are rigid or stuck in our ways, instead of adjusting to the world around us we hunker down, clinging to a concept of reality rather than reality itself. When we do this, we cut ourselves off from life, and we miss out on valuable opportunities, as well as a lot of joy.

Just as we create flexibility in our bodies by stretching physically, we can create limberness in our minds by stretching mentally. Every day we have the opportunity to exercise our flexibility. We can do this in small ways such as taking a different route home from work or changing our exercise routine. On a larger scale, we can rearrange the furniture or redo a room in our house. If these are things we already do regularly, we can stretch our minds by imagining several different possibilities for how the next year will unfold. As we do this, our minds become more supple and open, and when changes come our way, we are able to accommodate and flow with the new reality.

Independence

Independence

“I want to thank you for everything you’ve done for me and helped me to do over this past year,” Carrie said as she hugged me goodbye after her adjustment.  “This will be my first truly independent Independence Day in a very long time.”  I asked her what she meant and she told me that she had been relying upon her medical doctors, all of their medical tests, and their medications to get through each day ever since she was a little girl.

But since beginning her chiropractic care roughly a year ago and making some lifestyle modifications we suggested for her, as well as working on her focus for health, she had been able to get completely off all of her high blood pressure, cholesterol, bladder control, diabetes, migraine, Crohn’s Disease, allergy, arthritis, hypothyroid, and anti-anxiety medications.  She had also lost a total off 65 pounds and left a job she had hated for 14 years to open her own boutique.  Plus, her marriage was like brand new!

I asked her if she had to pick just one thing that she believed was the most important thing she had learned over the past year, what would it be?  She didn’t even hesitate; she put on a great big smile and said, “That I am not a victim of my body or a slave to medicine; that I am the one who ultimately decides what my health and my life will be like, not my doctor, and that if I really listen to my Inner Voice, it will never let me down!”

“So you’re not using outside pills, potions, lotions or advice as much?” I asked.  “NO!” she answered.  “And you’re not relying upon outside blood tests, urinalysis, DNA testing, bone density testing, x-rays, CT scans, and MRI’s to tell you if you are healthy or not?”  “Definitely not!” she exclaimed.  “And you’re not constantly running to some outside doctor every time you decide to try something new in your life?” I continued.  “No way!”

“So let me make sure I understand what you are telling me, Carrie,” I said.  “Instead of relying upon all of those OUTSIDE things, you are now listening to your Innate Intelligence – what you are calling your Inner Voice, is that right?”

She smiled at me and said, “That’s exactly right ! I am now living what you call from the inside-out!”

“So you are totally right then when you say this will be your first truly independent Independence Day!  Instead of relying upon all of those OUTSIDE things you used to; in other words, instead of being OUT – dependent, you now trust all of the miraculous workings of your body and the Inner Intelligence that guides and runs it.  You have truly become IN - dependent!”

“Wow,” Carrie said.  “I never thought about it that way, but I definitely have a whole new appreciation for what the words freedom and independence mean now.  And I don’t just mean freedom FROM all those things we just talked about.  I also mean the freedom TO direct my own health, my own life and to give to others at a level I have never been able to before.” Let’s begin today to make EVERY day IN – dependence day & freedom for health & life!
